Yet another variation of the matte style. As always, midtone contrast first, followed by the Levels layer to kill the blacks. In this case, there is also a vignette layer in between.

Overlay blend mode is the key here, as you'll see.

The warming filter I added afterwards (but put it under the Hue/Sat layers) because the rock and the skin looked incongruous.

A play with the "Dragan effect". The first three layers are duplicates of the Background layer, with High Pass filter run at various radii. The radii you choose will depend on your photo, so some experimentation is necessary.

Damien, I've tried to figure out how to re-create the fake beams of light but all I can do is drag that layer to my photo. :P Care to enlighten me?

It's a gradient layer.  Go to this page and search "gradient layer" and you'll get plenty of resources.

Using a gradient layer to add some fake beams of light.

I must say this simple LOOKING gradient is awesome ---something that I would like to learn how to do.  I can see it is a customized Gradient fill layer, that is directional --and has multiple stops added into the editing engine.   I can't tell what kind of gradient is was originally, nor do I know how to add these stops into a photograph like this.  I would like to learn how to do this.

Yes, this is an uncommon one, because it's not the colour that's changing.  You can see it's an entirely white layer. There are only two little tabs at the bottom, from white to white:

What's changing is the transparency along the way.  Each of these little tabs are either 0% (meaning completely transparent) or slightly higher (meaning partially visible).

I must say this is a look that I have wanted to use somewhat because of my photography involves landscapes -- I can see where it might be tempting to overuse the effect.  Thank you for this section.

On your dark photo, I dont' see how you added your layer of warmth.  Was it a Photo Filter?
