What about a layer mask with a soft tiny brush to brush in a few grass blades onto his shoe?

Or stamp tool with a non-solid (?) brush?

dodge and burn shadows under the boy layer, trying to follow direction of shadows angling towards the right

I think this is better (although the skin tones are awful - I can fix that later). If I am way off, maybe point me to one of your awesome tutorials courses?

I am really guessing with the sizing of him. He is obviously bigger than the baby on the great grandparents lap, smaller than the standing 10 yo. He is about the age/size of the little girl towards the back of the group, but with her being further back, I can't match his size to her.

This is him literally just placed onto the group photo.
