Smoothing backdrop for black and white image

I'm trying to smooth this backdrop to convert it to black and white. I don't mind the "marbled" look of the gray backdrop. I'm trying to smooth out the area in the top right corner the most. What's the best way to proceed? Full image and 700 crop.
