Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Hi Damien, this photo was scanned from a negative and needs to be fixed for an upcoming film project. Is there something I can do about the moire in Reagan's jacket? Thanks in advance for your help.
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Weird ... the moire doesn't show up in the crop... but it's pretty obnoxious otherwise. Going out a little further on the crop to see if it shows better.
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Okay, I don't get it. The film producers are complaining about the moire, but I'm not seeing it on the zoom.
Damien Symonds Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Well, you need to find out if they're viewing at 100%. Did you scan it yourself, or get somebody to do it?
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Had my intern scan it about 15 years ago from a negative. The photo will be used as b-roll in a film. This is a screen grab where it is much more visible.
Damien Symonds Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 1 minute ago, Lorie said: Had my intern scan it about 15 years ago from a negative. Ah, crap. So the negative is long gone?
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Yikes, yes. Long gone. If it's not possible, I get it. I just thought if ANYONE would have a fix, it would be you. But I'm prepared to tell the filmmakers "no can fix" if that's your verdict.
Damien Symonds Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 The issue is that MUCH too much sharpening was applied in the scan. Just now, Lorie said: If it's not possible, I get it. I just thought if ANYONE would have a fix, it would be you. Well, it doesn't need a fix, because there isn't a problem. As you said, there's no moire at 100%. So you need to tell the filmmakers to be more careful when resizing. https://www.damiensymonds.net/2015/02/moire.html
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 And just like that, all is right with the world again! Thanks, I'll get them on the right page.
Lorie Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 Re: the sharpening. Yes, it's true. All we have left of the Governor Reagan years were these little teeny negatives. To scan them at a resolution for posterity, they were scanned at like a bazillion dpi and the files ended up at about a gazillion MB each.
Damien Symonds Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 All of which is very wise. What WASN'T wise was the sharpening. Never sharpen during scanning.
