Pippa
Hi, I want to crack on with my monitor calibration (I have my xrite i1 display pro ready to go) but I'm really stuck on lighting and where to set up my monitor (Dell 2415U) and laptop. I don't have a study so my two options are: in my bedroom or on the kitchen table. The kitchen table position has a large window facing the screen (about 4m away - with a blockout blind) and a warm light over the table which can't be changed. I could change the rest of the kitchen downlights to be 4200 if need be. The bedroom monitor position has a very large window/door directly to the right of the screen (when facing it) with blockout curtains. The downlights could be changed to 4200 also. Which would be the best position to set up my monitor for best lighting? I do editing at any time of day - when the kids let me during the day and when they're sleeping (bliss!) I'm just after a bit of advice and guidance really. Any of either would be much appreciated. Cheers, Pippa
Damien Symonds
Hi Pippa, would it be possible to show me photos of the two locations?

Pippa
Hi Damien, here are the pics. The first pic you can see the monitor in the kitchen area facing the window. The window is on the SW side of the house. It has a block-out blind. This area can be a little dark as this is the only window for this area. The second pic is the bedroom option. The window has block out curtains and faces NW. In the afternoon this room is very bright but the curtains help. I can replace all down-lights with 4200K if needed. The pendant light over the kitchen table is a bit harder to replace. Which is the lesser of two evils?? Many thanks, Pippa

Pippa
Hi Damien, next dilemma I can't seem to find a globe to fit my light fittings that's around 4000K, the closest to cool white I can find is 5700K. Is that going to be too blue? Cheers, Pippa
Damien Symonds
It might be ok. Better to err high than low.
Pippa
Hi again Damien, You mention that to begin calibration that the room should be dim. How dim should it be? I.e. no overhead lights on during the day with curtains closed? Lights off but curtains slightly open? Getting stuck on the little details Pippa PS: I've probably caught you watching the State of Origin...go Maroons, right??

You should have enough light to see what you're doing, but not any spilling directly on the monitor.
