scratch disk and cache

Recommended Posts

Hi Brian, I just ran into the problem of my scratch disk being full and my cache for Bridge is also full and not displaying my photos.  I just read through some of your information and realized I should have this on my D drive and not my C drive.  But, I couldn't find any instruction on how to do so.  If there are instructions somewhere can you point me in the right direction to find them or is it as simple as cutting what I want to move from my C drive and pasting on my D drive?  If it is that easy am I just removing the whole adobe folder and moving it over?

What size is your C Drive? How much is free? Same thing for your D Drive. How large and how much is free? Also what version of Windows are we talking about?

I'm going to assume you are on Windows 10. If you have a large D Drive, and a small C Drive, then it might be in your best interest to not only move the Photoshop Scratch Disk, but also the Windows Swap File, aka Pagefile.sys. Here is a decent web page giving your instructions on how to move the Windows Pagefile.sys to the D Drive:

How to move Virtual Memory to a Different Drive on Windows 10

As for setting the Scratch Disk, it's pretty easy. You will be interested in Part 4 of this Article. Even though it's in the Macintosh Group, the steps are nearly identical. All you have to do is the following:

  1. Open Photoshop
  2. Click the Edit Menu
  3. Look for "Preferences"
  4. Head to the Scratch Disk Section
  5. Put a check mark next to the D Drive, then uncheck the C Drive
  6. Click Apply / OK
  7. Close and reopen Photoshop.

Easy Peasy. But still give my article a read, there is more PS setup stuff that you need to check. As far as Bridge, I'm sure it's a similar kind of process, but you might have to ask Damien on that one.

Hopefully that gives you the info you are asking for.  My C drive is over full and is in red with only 2.5GB available, and my D drive is showing 788GB free.  Sorry after reading all your advice I know this is a problem, I didn't research it much to be honest. Just started looking into it now that I am having issues. I appreciate your help so much. If you have anything else I can read to see if there is anything else I can move I would appreciate. Thank you so much for getting me this far.
