Maybe off topic? Gaming…

Recommended Posts

Hi! You’ve helped me in the past…. Looking to buy a gaming laptop for my son. I want 1TB storage. How do I know of the laptop I’m looking at can be modified?

Here’s what I’m looking at:

What games does he usually play? If it's something like Minecraft, it's OK. If it's anything like a Simulation game or First Person Shooter, forget it.

One thing that jumps out at me is "i5," that's too old technology-wise today. You really want an i7 or better.

Gone are the days of upgrading things. You can't buy something more affordable and then bump up the RAM, replace the HD like you did years ago. Nope. Manufactures want you in the market sooner or later.

My son purchased a laptop similar to those specs, he is complaining that he now needs a new one because it's "Too Slow." He is kicking himself for wasting the money and should have waited.

I'm sorry, I'd pass on that one. Even for Photo Editing.

Here is a better laptop, for a little more money:

It comes with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB HD. Even though I'd prefer a RTX 3070 card, I'm not having you spend $2600 on a stupid laptop. Everything is $1000 to $1500 more than it should be.

how about this?  Don’t know the brand, but thought specs were ok??

This is a problem with buying a computer in 2021...manufactures are skimping on what they offer. While it might seem OK, you don't have 512GB HD to play with. After formatting, Windows and the crappy bloat-ware software, you are left with around 300GB or so. Maybe a little more. Basically, what games does he play? If they are Gigabytes and Gigabytes huge, he might be able to install 3-5 games. Which is fine if he plays one-at-a-time. If he wants to drop a bunch of games and flip-flop between them, you need more storage. At least 1TB.

In reality, you are looking at spending $2500 for a Gaming Laptop that is "Good."

The specs with the Gigabyte Laptop are fine, that being said, their Technical Support Center leaves much to be desired. So it will be fine when it works, but if you have problems...good-luck, and it was this way before COVID. I'd hate to see what it's like now.

But the specs...yep. Other than the HD, I see no issues.

Here is one worth considering, and one I would get:

I'm not seeing much on Best Buy's Website in your budget range. With the way 2021 is going, if you see something that looks good, BUY IT. Because in a few days that laptop will be gone forever.
