kellycaps
I am looking to figure out (after much Googling) how to create a TXT. file from a folder of images. A text list of the image names in a folder.
Damien Symonds
Just drag and drop the folder onto an empty Firefox tab. That will give you a text list, including a file size column, date created, and stuff. Then copy and paste that list into an empty Excel or Google Sheets document, and the filenames should fall into a neat column (beside the other columns with file sizes and stuff). I'm not sure if it works with other browsers. I tried it with Edge and it didn't work (not surprisingly).

kellycaps
Is this the same as an Index.txt Index.txt File (this file will sort the image files so that they flow to the correct location on your portrait pages)

Where are you seeing this?
kellycaps
Kind of. I copied the list into excel, but it renamed all the images with (File:) in front of each of the file names.
kellycaps
So, I am trying to create an index.txt file so that I can float a folder of images into InDesign for a yearbook student/staff layout page. I am also the school photographer, but I have never had to create the above file. I am new at building the yearbook.

Mind you, I used Google Sheets instead of Excel, maybe there's a difference.

I'm not new to InDesign, nor entirely to yearbooks, but I've never done this before either. Can you link me to the instructions you're following? Damien Symonds
So you're using this TreeRing program to create your book?

No. I have just been looking all over the web to find an answer to creating the Index.txt file I am creating the yearbook from scratch following the previous persons layout. I found a video of how to populate the student images into Indesign using the Index
Damien Symonds
This seems terribly unnecessary. Can't you just drop them in from Bridge as normal?
kellycaps
IDK... Can I? I am VERY NEW to this. I can try. I think the idea behind using the spreadsheet, is it would populate the images along with the corresponding names.
Damien Symonds
Have you already named the photo files with the kids' names? How many kids? Hundreds? Thousands?
kellycaps
I have renamed 2 grades so far. I added their names in the metadata via LR upon 1st import. There are a total of 560 students + - & 140 staff
Damien Symonds
This is beyond me, I'm so sorry. I have some experience with InDesign, but it doesn't extend to populating text fields with metadata
kellycaps
Thank you for trying!!! I wish I hadn't wasted all that time inputting the metadata, when I should have been renaming the files. Lesson learned! Seriously...thank you for your help
Damien Symonds
Honestly, I'm still not convinced you should be doing either of those things. If you have to type the names anyway, why not just type them into the text field in InDesign, after dropping the photo in from Bridge?
