The MAJOR reason to shoot Raw

All those previous reasons are handy little bonuses, but there’s one huge reason that dwarfs all others:

Capture and use every single particle of light that comes through your lens

Forget about your problem-fixing, or your enlargements, or your bit depth, or whatever. This is what it’s all about. Almost every speck of light that hits your sensor is captured for you to manipulate.

Nothing gets thrown away.

Jpeg files can only contain a limited range of tones. As you know, it’s all too easy to blow out bright areas (eg skies) and lose detail, when shooting Jpeg. But Raw files can contain a much bigger range of tones, and that’s what makes Raw superior.

We’ll examine this in greater detail in Module 2.
