OS Big Sur 11.2

I'm not a fan of how Big Sur is tracking what you do, what apps you load and where you do this on what machine. I'm sure it records geographically where you use things and at what time.  Apple is getting a bit too cozy for my tastes. Honestly, unless you have a brand new Mac, a brand new iPhone 12, new Apple TV and a whole new Apple Eco-system that you use on a daily basis...

Don't bother upgrading. Seriously. You aren't missing much. I know, this is probably bugging you:

In addition, if the current version of PS is meeting your needs and not giving you problems, then stay there. As I've said in the past, Damien, THE Master himself, uses CS6!! In my humble opinion, he seems to edit just fine. The core of PS hasn't changed a whole lot, the only things that have are the fancy tools like Content Aware and such. Photoshop is still Photoshop.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Resist the FOMO, you really aren't missing with anything. Catalina has most of the bugs worked out by now and it's a stable OS.

Ok thanks Brian.  My brand new Mac (well a couple of months old) slowed to a crawl and wouldn't cooperate with anything I tried to do so I ended up updating to Big Sur and it's fine now.  But I will stick with Photoshop 21.2.4.

If it works, great. Adobe and Apple have a love-hate relationship. Expect things to not work 100% of the time. :D

Some updates will fix things, others will break things. I also am aware that Big Sur had a update patch to fox a critical flaw within the last few weeks. Make sure your Big Sur is up-to-date.

Hi Brian!  I have a new Mac....I started having issues with it being really slow last month so I updated to Big Sur and it was fine until a couple of days ago.  It appears my Mac has updated the PS to 21.2.4 (I definitely didn't do it deliberately) and Bridge to 10.1.1.666.  Now my Mac doesn't like to open Bridge.  And if it finally decides to open it, it's very very slow and I spend more time watching a spinning wheel than doing any actual editing.  I'm also having trouble ejecting my external hard drive and my card reader although quite often it will eject my hard drive on its own.

I updated to Big Sur 11.2.2 yesterday thinking that maybe this was a known issue and the update would fix it but noooooooo that didn't work.

Help please!

Forgot to mention....I've been trying two different external hard drives....one is a Lacie and the other is a "My Passport for Mac".  I've always had problems with the Lacie ejecting all on its own (I've had more than one Lacie and more than one Mac and it's been a continuous problem) so I've been trying to switch over to the Passport for Mac, but loading my images onto the Passport is extremely slow AND my Mac does not like to eject it at all!  Do you have a recommendation for an external hard drive?

Yes, but I will warn you...I have expensive tastes. One thing I do not cheap-out on is my external hard drives, since that's where my data resides. I own two G-Drives, a 12TB and a 4TB. The 12TB is where my images are stored, and the 4TB is a dedicated Time Machine Backup Drive, with nothing on it except Time Machine Backups.

The cool part is, G-Drives come Mac-Formatted and include all necessary cables.

Here is a 6TB Thunderbolt G-Drive.

For a bit more, you can get a 10TB Version. I find this to be a better deal as the cost per Gigabyte is less. If you think about it, $350 for 6TB vs $490 for a 10TB. That's only $140 difference for 4TB more. Basically, it's like you are buying two drives.

What I would do, is get a G-Drive, and use your Passport as a dedicated Time Machine Drive. Oh, you'd use the Thunderbolt 3 port in your Mac for the G-Drive. Thunderbolt 3.0 is extremely fast and it's almost like working off your internal hard drive.

So it certainly appears that my problems with Bridge are somehow connected to the Lacie.  When I switch to a file on my desktop or on the Passport for Mac, it seems to work fine.  I'm assuming there is something on the Lacie that Bridge doesn't like.

I am in the process of making sure all of my Lacie files are backed up on the Passport.  Once that is done, is there a utility that will find the problem on the Lacie and repair it?  I'm still going to look at the G drives because Lacies  constantly eject on their own (I've had 2 Macs and 3 lacies and it's happened consistently) which I know leads to corrupt files.

One more question and this may even be the problem with the Lacie.....sometimes I have to purge the cache to get the thumbnails to display properly and occasionally, instead of displaying properly, it shows a Denoise icon.  Yes I have and sometimes use Denoise. Don't tell Damien :)  How do I get it to show Bridge (or should it be PS)?

No. I don't think it's a "Hard Drive" problem  per se, as I think the problem lies in the physical connection between the Hard Drive and computer. You see, that case the LaCie HD resides in, there is a small computer controller board that also contains the USB port and sometimes, the power port. IF that board is flaky or the firmware (software that makes a computer device physically work) has a bug in it, that could explain your issues. Basically, I highly recommend getting off the data from that LaCie Drive and then just stop using it.

"But I spent all that money..."

Yep. I get it. But these are your images you are talking about. Taking the loss on the HD and moving on is way less expensive than sending that drive out to have emergency data recovery, which could cost thousands. Not worth risking your data/images on a flaky drive. I also own ONE LaCie Drive, but stopped recommending them once multiple members started having problems. Still love my G-Drives though! Best money that I have spent in a long time, even though they are pricey. I like my HDs to be Enterprise Grade and really beefy / fast.

Beats me. Let's get a HD that is stable first, then we will worry about Bridge. Keep in mind with today's modern cameras, Raw files are HUGE. So it doesn't surprise me you have to purge the cache every-once-in-a-while to keep things running smoothly. As far as why Denoise is showing up, that has to do with your Operating System getting confused with the file association type. The "Open with..." thing.

But like I said, first things first. Get your HD situation straightened out first. ;)

I have a new external hard drive, a G-tech.  In the process of putting my 2021 files on it.

Meanwhile, I found the spot in Bridge where you change the "open with" but everything looks good (I think).  Nothing is opening with topaz/denoise. There is a "reset to default" but I have not tried it yet.

This is what it looks like in Finder and in Bridge. All of my files on March 1 and March 2 are like the screenshots below and I've seen it the odd time before March 1.....usually I get grey squares and so I purge the cache and some/all will reappear with the Denoise icon but then will usually change to the image thumbnail.

It’s set to Denoise instead of ACR. Try resetting it to default and then see what happens. It won’t break or damage anything, the worst that will happen is the computer will prompt you to choose the correct program to associate those files with.
