Collage story board

Hello, so i am trying to figure out one of the tutorials,The simple story board tutorial, and when making a collage for say, I am having trouble figuring out how to make all the shapes on one layer versus many, I am using Photoshop CC and the icons that are mentioned in the daigrams don't seem to match, and i can not figure that part out, Thank you
