Jackie Matthews
Looking to add a new monitor screen to my laptop (giving my current monitor to my daughter) what are your recommendations for a good hdr screen and what to look for? Thanks
Brian
A 27” Screen IPS Display Panel 2560 x 1440 Resolution Non-Glossy / Matte Display 95% sRGB Coverage or greater. Here is one: Dell UltraSharp U2722DE Do NOT buy a display that’s 27” or larger if it has a 1920 x 1080 resolution. It will look like garbage. That resolution is fine for 24" screens and smaller. 4K displays are all the rage, but they aren’t required. You must also increase the scaling to 125% or 150% to make things look right in Windows. Jackie Matthews
Thanks Brian. Can you tell me it screens are measured diagonally like tv screens or is the 27" you refer to the actual width of the screen? Thanks
Brian
All displays, even the (CRT) "Tube" Displays from years ago are measured diagonally. So 27" isn't as "Big" as one would think. Now, don't get me wrong...a 24" display is also perfectly fine, but after working on a 27" Mac for years, there is no going back. That said, I find 32 Inch Displays and Larger to be "Too Big." For me, 27" is the place to be. 2560 x 1440 resolution. Yep, I don't want a 4K Display. (Well, I have a 5K Display on my 27" iMac, but Apple has scaling down to an Art-form and you don't "Notice" the 5K, it feels like a regular 27" at a lower resolution.) What happens when you get a 4K 27" screen without adjusting the scaling? Everything is SUPER TINY! Like you can't read the menu choices tiny. LOL!! That's what you need to tell Windows to present your screen at +125% or even +150% so you can read a 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Brian, Is the price difference due to the QHD in the Dell UltraSharp U2722DE? I need to upgrade my screen. When I compare the Dell UltraSharp U2722DE to this one https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1797711-REG/dell_u2724d_ultrasharp_27_60hz_ips.html/specs I see a significant price difference. I value your opinion re: a) yes, buy for the future; or b) it's unnecessary to spend $500+. I do Photoshop and light Premiere. Also, please advise where to send donation. I'm not clear if I use the general "Donate" button below. Thank you.

I do Photoshop and light Premiere. It's because Amazon is being stupid and charging you WAY more for a discontinued display. I need to change my recommendations. Anyway, I would not buy that Dell Display you linked to, it's really meant for Gaming and is "IPS-Like." Not Genuine IPS, but "IPS-Like." I'd buy this Display instead. Dell UltraSharp 27" 1440p Monitor - U2724D. If you notice, it has a "24" instead of a "22," which indicates the model year. Looks like it's on sale for $344.99, so pick one up while it's $85 off. Brian
Now, here are the specs of the monitor: BUT!! These two modes we need to DISABLE: We do not want an ambient light sensor dorking around with the brightness on its own, nor do we want "ComfortView Plus" messing around with the Blue Light. We want our colors to be as accurate as possible. So the 1st thing you need to do if you get that display is to figure out how to turn both of those features off. If you can't return it and let me know. I swear, as time goes on it's getting harder and harder to find technology that isn't automatic.
