Melissalile
Hi Damien! I have an odd question. I have 2 external monitors, one at work and one at home. no matter where I'm editing, there are times that I click on that external monitor to activate Photoshop after I've been on facebook or other program, and the photo I'm working on either dims or brightens. It happens on both monitors. Any idea why this happens? I can't predict when it will happen.
Damien Symonds
Do you mean you carry your laptop between work and home, and plug it in to each monitor depending where you are?
Melissalile
Yes. I carry my laptop between work and home.
Damien Symonds
Ok, so it must be an issue with the laptop then, not the screens. I might move this question into Brian's section, he's much better with Mac stuff than me.
Damien Symonds
What makes/models are the external screens? Can you PLEASE hurry up and post some photos in the Raw and Levels classes? The Skin Class will blow your mind.
Melissalile
The screens are Dell. Recommended by you. I can't figure out the model. all my paperwork is at the studio. I really need to go back over the classes and participate more! I'm so swamped right now, but need to make time!! Wait! This is it. Damien Symonds
Great, two of the same? Both calibrated the same?
Melissalile
Yes, I use the same calibration device. Color Munki I one display or something like that.
Damien Symonds
Great. Can you check to make sure the screens aren't on their "Dynamic" colour setting. They most likely should be on "Standard". It's not quite clear from your original question - does this problem happen all the time? Or only occasionally? And has it happened since forever, or can you remember there was a time when it didn't happen?
Melissalile
The monitor at home is on Standard. I can check the one at work tomorrow. It happens occasionally. And, I would say it's been within the last 2 months.

The "Dynamic" thing is the only reason I can think of that might be attributable to the screens themselves. If they're both on "Standard" then I'd say it's a Mac issue. 33 minutes ago, Melissalile said: It happens occasionally. And, I would say it's been within the last 2 months. Did anything change two months ago that you can recall? New Mac, new calibrator, new OS?
Melissalile
Yes, I use the same calibration device. Color Munki I one display or something like that. No new equipment, but Apple did have to re install the operating system about 3 months ago.
Damien Symonds
Ok, let's see if @Brian knows of a system setting that might be doing it.

Brian
Hmm... I'd first head to System Preferences >> Click Displays >> Uncheck / Turn Off "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes." Let us know if that helps or not.
Melissalile
Brian, Thank you for the suggestion! I just unchecked that box. Fingers crossed! Melissa
Melissalile
Brian, I've been on vacation until now. It happened again after I unchecked the box. I'm going to calibrate the externals again to see if I can get it back to normal.
Brian
I've also seen this as a Thunderbolt issue with no real solution.
Damien Symonds
This doesn't happen if Photoshop is on the laptop screen, I assume?
Melissalile
Well, to be honest, I've not edited on the laptop screen since I purchased the external monitors!

Melissalile
I'm going to calibrate both the laptop and external that is at home tonight. I'll play with PS on the laptop only and see if it happens again!
Melissalile
Quick question, what is "enable ADC"?
Melissalile
I'm planning on doing the laptop without having the external connected. Not sure if it matters or not.
