ok so once you straighten it you keep it as a smart object?

if you change it back does it undo the straightening or can you not undo turning the background into a smart object...if im making sense

iz that because I didn't rasterise the smart object layer, or something like that (it popped up on the screen..)

You're ON the smart object layer!  I can see that you've made a blank layer for cloning, but you're not on it!

Yes, you gave me exactly the right screenshot.

Also, your Clone Tool is set to "Current Layer" in the Options Bar.  That's bad.  It must always be set to "Current & Below".
