NancyA Posted Monday at 06:51 PM Posted Monday at 06:51 PM I'm pulling out my old MacBook Pro 2018 to take on a trip to France. It is currently using 22.5.7 PS with Catalina OS 10.15 7. The upgrade OS that came up as available is Sequoia. Downloaded but not installed yet. What do you recommend for PS and OS's before I mess it up! This hasn't been used in 3 years so not sure what to leave alone and what to upgrade. I basically just need it to download images each day and review for what I need to change/work on for next days shoots but don't want to see the multitude of popups everyday telling me I need to upgrade! Plus since I will have it be nice to use it for basic stuff and it would be easier to navigate if I'm closer to what I use on present computer. The stats for the 2018 are: 15 Inch 2018; processor 2.9 GHz 6-core intel core i9; memory 32 GB; graphics intel UHD graphics 630 1536 MB. Thanks!
NancyA Posted Monday at 07:09 PM Author Posted Monday at 07:09 PM Just additional info. Tried to edit above thread and wouldn't let me. I can't get email to even let me put in password and from what I'm reading I will have to upgrade the OS. I'm sure I will run into other issues but figure now is the time to upgrade it to what it can handle reasonable. Thanks
Brian Posted yesterday at 01:18 AM Posted yesterday at 01:18 AM You are going to need a new laptop. Period. Do not upgrade Photoshop. You can upgrade to Ventura, but honestly? I wouldn't. If you do upgrade, you are on your own and I would expect problems. For you, and your current laptop, you have to pretend it's 2022, maybe 2023 at the latest. We are headed into 2027, and that will be 9 years for that laptop which is a good run as most computers usually last about 7 years or so. Believe me, I know it sucks, I know that it's expensive, but technology moves forward and sooner or later the current software will not install on a computer that is almost a decade old. Apple has completely abandoned computers / laptops that were released in 2020 and earlier. Hell, I think the ones for 2022 are now orphaned. I am in the same boat as I'm still on my 2017 iMac and can't upgrade. I need a new computer, but I have my money tied up in something else. Oh, to add misery...Apple's prices are going to increase for the soon-to-be-released M5 models, on both Mac Minis, Mac Laptops and Mac Studios. The Data Center / AI Craze that has CEO's convinced that we NEED these things have hit Apple prices that they get for purchasing components, like memory chips. Western Digital is sold out of HDs until 2028. So any stock that is on the current shelves is what is there and prices HAVE INCREASED DRAMATICALLY. So since Apple's COGS have increased, so will the prices to offset those increased costs. Start saving. Plan on $4000+ for a new MBP.

Current / Upgraded Versions of Photoshop WILL REALLY START BITCHING AND GIVE YOU ERROR MESSAGE AFTER ERROR MESSAGE. Photoshop HATES-HATES-HATES that Video Card. Intel UHD Graphics in ANY form, Desktop or Laptop aren't designed for today's "Modern Photoshop." That laptop's specs are meant for "General Computing;" watching Netflix on the plane, checking e-mail, watching YouTube, wasting time on FB, stuff like that. If you do decide to take that laptop, I would just use it to dump photos to it, and maybe use Bridge to cull / rate things. No editing really.
NancyA Posted yesterday at 02:35 AM Author Posted yesterday at 02:35 AM I'll leave it as is. I haven't used it for three years and just wanted to take on France trip since it is lighter (and old) and all I want is a computer to dump images on. I tried a setup using this hub https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXJQT19B?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title . It worked fine transferring images from my sony a6700 files but when I tried to move a large number from my sony A! camera I finally gave up. It wouldn't even start the transfer. my iPhone would not recognize my SDD external using the usb C so had to switch it to USB A and I figured that was some of the slow down issue.
