Paige
I am in the middle of doing a frequency separation for a bride's face. I've completed the frequency separation by setting the blending mode of the texture layer to linear light. When I go to the next step of adding a gaussian blur to a selection on my texture layer, and I expect it to leave the skin texture yet remove the blotchiness, it's not happening. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Damien Symonds
May I see a 100% crop of her skin, without any FS applied?

Damien Symonds
Oh gee. You haven't even removed the noise! Go back raw. https://www.damiensymonds.net/2010/07/raw-noise-removal.html What you need to understand is that Frequency Separation is a wildly over-rated, stupid, unnecessary technique. It's largely promoted and favoured by people who don't know how to edit. The latest "fad diet" of the editing world, as it were. Once you've re-processed the raw file, show me the 100% crop again. Paige
Oh, I just showed you the original. Nothing was done

Paige
How do you do skin smoothing since FS is overrated and unnecessary?
Damien Symonds
That's what I want to talk to you about. Go ahead and do your raw processing, then post the 100% crop again.
Paige
Did I remove enough noise?

There is so much more I'd like to discuss about this photo. Oh CRAP! I just noticed a VERY bad problem. Please go here to fix it.
Damien Symonds
Also, I noticed that you didn't take the 100% crop properly. Please read the instructions again.

Damien Symonds
Great. Perfect. Now, talk to me about what you feel the skin needs. To my eye, there are just a few little spots on the forehead, and maybe one or two on her chin. I don't see anything else? Those spots are easily fixed with Dust & Scratches. Paige
Yes there aren't many spots that need work. I'll look at that link. Thanks.

Paige
Damien, I know you prefer PS but do you also have noise removal instructions if I do my raw edits in LR?
Damien Symonds
It's exactly the same in LR.
Paige
Ok. Here I am. What route do you recommend for sharpening a portrait? Oh and what do you think of the smoothing, etc?
Damien Symonds
Hmmm ... what happened? The photo is suddenly much darker than before?
Damien Symonds
Oh crap. And it's untagged. This is really bad. Always make sure the Profile box is checked when saving:
Paige
It's darker, I edited it again starting with the original. I wanted to try your dust and scratches for skin and eye bag solution. I may bring exposure back up. Obviously I have a learning curve! lol
