Tmarch Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Hi Damien, I love this look by Sandra Hill http://www.sandrahillphotography.com/pretty-baby-girl-brantford-ontario-newborn-photographer-hamilton-ontario-toronto-ontario/ but for all my edit attempts I can't work out what is making hers so warm and magic and mine just look over-cooked. My photo is SOOR and obviously there is some blanket smoothing required but I know how to do that.
Damien Symonds Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Sure, I can help you with this. Go ahead and do your full normal clean edit on your photo (including skin work), then post again. We'll talk about changing the fabric colours, and adding that warm effect to the overall image.
Damien Symonds Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Your skin work is lovely. Really lovely. But your blanket work is dodgy as sin. It's really obvious where you've tried to clone pattern and it doesn't line up. What do you think of this for the blanket?
Tmarch Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 Whoa! Firstly, thank you. Getting a compliment like that from you really means something. That blanket smoothing is awesome. I usually hide my dodgy blanket work with a blurred vignette, but how did you do that?
Tmarch Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 I can't believe I never thought of that. I need more practice at D&B but here is my attempt at your method for the blanket. It still looks pretty dodgy compared to yours.
Damien Symonds Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Yes, keep painting on that D&B layer, with a 5% opacity brush. Patience is the key.
Damien Symonds Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Great. Now warm bub's right arm and both hands a bit. See how the skintone is a bit different?
Tmarch Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Yeah I think those warm tones are about right, it feels a little dark and maybe Sandra Hill has a bit of "vomit layer" to soften it a bit more. I was actually thinking I should give you some more money soon as your help is always amazing. I will sign up for the Levels class upgrade, especially as purple/red hands and feet are some of a newborn photographers biggest trouble spots.

Tmarch Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Yes so far as I can see all the images on that post look to have the same in processing, her shadows aren't totally black. For example where my baby's arm touches the blanket is really dark, which is an easy enough levels change. Some of it may be due to her lighting vs my lighting as well.
Damien Symonds Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Oh, I see what you mean. Sorry, I mistakenly assumed you wanted your photo to look good. I'll try again. 4
Tmarch Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) hahaha. I do know how much you love the vomit layer Edited March 2, 2016 by Tmarch
Tmarch Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) Thanks, so now should I post this image in the Deluxe Levels class for help with the hand? Edited March 2, 2016 by Tmarch
Tmarch Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Oh my gosh. I just compared this new edit with my original edit. I love this so much more, thank you so much!
