Overprinting

As if you weren’t already confused enough about black, here’s another matter we must discuss - overprint. And again, this revolves around the risk of misregistration.

Overprinting is necessary when we have black text on top of another colour.  Here’s an example I’ve created:

The default settings of your software will automatically cut out the text shapes from the coloured area. So the four separate inks will print like this:

You can probably anticipate the problem already. If the black ink is even a tiny bit misaligned, it will have white space around it. And so the print, when examined up close, could look like this:
