I'm not quite sure what you're familiar with in LR, but in Bridge, any time I open a folder, I see these numbers: Down the bottom, the total, and in the Filter menu, the breakdown of what they are.

No, editing in dim light is extremely foolish. You must edit (and yes, compare prints) in good bright light.
