That sounds like the right place for the ICC profile, yes. After you've put it in there, go to Edit>Color Settings, and load the color settings file they sent you. Then show me a screenshot of the Color Settings window once those settings are loaded.

You're right. In Color Settings, you should be able to import the color settings file they've sent you. However, it's most probably necessary to make sure you've put the ICC file in the correct folder first. Did they give you any guidance about that? I'm afraid I don't know where profiles go on a Mac, though I vaguely recall it might be Library>ColorSync, or something like that? And why are you putting up with this? This is very hasty, but I wanted to show you how to do it: Download PSD

First of all, I want to say that your job doesn't look at all Photoshopped. Yes, it's not perfect, but will anyone notice? Not a bit. Secondly, I want to say that you were looking at exactly the right method. But because it's the opposite (black background not white) you have to make the background around the hair perfectly black, then use "Screen" blend mode (as opposed to "Multiply" in the white method).

And you're worried about how you lost some wisps of hair, is that correct?

And what will the new background look like?

All of which is very wise. What WASN'T wise was the sharpening. Never sharpen during scanning.
