So, do you have another screen in your house that you can plug in to the computer and run as a second screen, and see what happens when you calibrate that? If you could elaborate on that, it would be great.

The patch tool is definitely a legitimate approach here. The only thing about that tool is that it can get tricky when you get very close to hairs - have you found that? Here is another method I tried (a combination of this and this). How does it compare to your patch tool one?

No, the problem isn't the light in which you're calibrating, the problem is the light falling on your prints when you're viewing them. If you turn the lights off and just use the window light, is there any difference?

On the subject of your actual question, generally it looks a bit bad if you just put plain black behind people (as you've found out). It seems to be better if you make it a dark grey to black gradient. Hold on, I'll see if I can find examples.
